Background of the Study
Road infrastructure is a fundamental driver of economic development, connecting markets, communities, and resources. In Etsako East Local Government Area, Edo State, poor road conditions have significantly hampered economic growth. Inadequate and deteriorated roads hinder the movement of goods and people, increasing transportation costs and reducing market efficiency (Oghenekaro, 2023). Local businesses experience delays, and the general community faces challenges in accessing essential services. Studies have shown that investments in infrastructure correlate with improved economic performance and social well-being (Igbinoba, 2024). The region’s economic activities are largely dependent on road networks that link rural and urban centers. However, the persistent poor state of roads has led to decreased investor confidence and stunted economic growth (Ekene, 2025). This study explores how poor road infrastructure affects economic development and identifies potential interventions to address these infrastructural deficits, thereby promoting sustainable economic progress (Abasi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Etsako East Local Government Area suffers from deteriorated road infrastructure that severely impedes economic development. The poor condition of roads leads to increased transportation costs, reduced market accessibility, and slower economic transactions. These infrastructural challenges result in decreased investments and hinder local economic growth. This study aims to identify the specific impacts of poor road conditions on economic development and propose measures to improve road infrastructure and stimulate growth (Ajayi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the current state of road infrastructure in Etsako East.

  • To evaluate the impact of road conditions on economic activities and local businesses.

  • To recommend strategies for improving road infrastructure to boost economic development.

Research Questions

  • What is the current condition of road infrastructure in the area?

  • How does poor road infrastructure affect local economic activities?

  • What measures can be taken to improve road infrastructure and stimulate economic growth?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Poor road infrastructure significantly hinders economic development.

  • H₂: There is a significant relationship between road conditions and transportation costs.

  • H₃: Improvements in road infrastructure will lead to enhanced economic performance.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive evaluation of how road infrastructure affects economic development in Etsako East. The findings will assist government agencies and stakeholders in prioritizing infrastructure investments for sustainable economic growth (Osarhiemen, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating the effects of road infrastructure on economic development in Etsako East Local Government Area. It does not include broader regional comparisons or historical analyses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Road Infrastructure: The network of roads, highways, and bridges that facilitate transportation.

  • Economic Development: The process of improving economic well-being and quality of life.

  • Transportation Costs: The expenses associated with the movement of goods and people.
